My most recent work, the Quarantine paintings, source from very detailed drawings that I create while sitting in bed and usually in the morning. The drawings are the image language of my unconscious and the equivalent of my sleeping dreams. The drawings build a visual language which I depend on while creating the paintings. From April of last year until late September I finished 9 paintings of various sizes. I experienced a particularly fruitful time in solitude and silence in my communal studio space which was absent of all others due to the pandemic. 2021 brings fresh hope but still the pandemic rages and so too will the quarantine series continue.
The act of making these paintings contains an awareness of an emotional reality before I can consciously access it. I imagine scraping at a fossil with a fine tool, scraping and scraping to reveal what lays beneath the sentiment that my defenses have layered on the original form. The feelings contained in the work run the gambit; isolation, repulsion, empathy, humor, acceptance, anger, love, violence, fear, connection and loss.
